TLDR overview
- “Best” depends on the task. Greenfield features, refactoring, debugging, test writing and code review ask different things of a model, and your codebase decides which differences matter.
- Use seven criteria, not one score. Correctness, security, maintainability, repository context, latency, cost and governance can each change the answer.
- Treat leaderboards as a shortlist. Model versions, test sets and harnesses vary, and OpenAI stopped reporting a widely used coding benchmark in February 2026 after finding flawed tests.
- Verify independently, whatever you pick. Studies of many models find security and quality gaps in generated code, so a separate, consistent verification step should decide what ships.
Search for the best LLM for coding and you will find confident rankings that disagree with one another and go stale within weeks. Since the start of September 2026, Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) have each released at least one new model, according to their own documentation. A leaderboard snapshot cannot keep pace with that, and it cannot tell you how a model behaves in your repositories.
This post gives you a decision framework instead of a winner: how to define “best,” what to measure, how to run a pilot, and why independent verification belongs in your stack whichever model you choose.
The framework at a glance
- Define the tasks you want help with and what “accepted” means for each.
- Shortlist two or three models and pin exact versions.
- Pilot them on your own repositories and measure acceptance, not impressions.
- Validate in CI with the same checks and quality gate for every candidate.
- Set guardrails and re-run the pilot when a model or version changes.
What does “best LLM for coding” actually mean?
No single LLM writes the best code for every team. The best model is the one that performs best on your tasks, in your repositories, within your cost, latency and governance limits, and that performance has to be measured rather than assumed. Public leaderboards can shortlist candidates; they cannot make the final choice.
Three things make a universal winner unlikely. First, the field is broad: hosted models from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and SpaceXAI sit alongside open-weight families from DeepSeek, Alibaba (Qwen) and Mistral, and each vendor documents different context windows, effort settings and retirement policies. Second, versions move quickly, so any comparison describes a moment, not a model. Third, “good code” is not one property. A change can pass its tests and still be insecure, hard to maintain or expensive to review.
Developers already use more than one tool. In Stack Overflow’s 2026 Developer Survey, about 80% of respondents said they use two or more AI tools for work, and about two-thirds said they had switched AI tools during the year. Teams are not choosing a model once. They are managing several and changing them.
What criteria should you use to compare AI coding models?
A fair AI coding model comparison scores every candidate against the same seven criteria. Weight them by what your team can least afford to get wrong.
Cost and context interact. In Sonar’s own study of six repository pairs (27 tasks, about 540 runs with Claude Code and Sonnet 4.6), agents used 7.2% fewer input tokens and 8.5% fewer output tokens on average in the cleaner codebases, with a pass-rate difference under one percentage point. The authors argue: “What drives the cost isn’t how much the agent writes, it’s how much code the agent has to look at in order to write it.” The study is Sonar’s own rather than third-party, and savings varied widely from task to task.
How do AI coding models compare on common development tasks?
This post does not rank models. A ranking is only as good as its documented methodology, model versions, test set and refresh schedule, and a blog post cannot stand behind those for every task below. What you can compare reliably is what each task demands and how to test it.
Studies that test many models point to gaps that span models rather than to one vendor. Veracode’s 2025 study analyzed 80 coding tasks across more than 100 models and found that in 45% of test cases the models introduced vulnerabilities classified within the OWASP Top 10. Its July 2026 update, which tested models without security-specific prompting, puts the average security pass rate at 56%, “virtually unchanged since last year’s report.” BaxBench, a 2025 benchmark of generated backends, found that exploits could be executed against around half of the correct programs each model generated, on average. In Sonar’s own Coding Personalities research (October 2025: six models of that period, more than 4,400 Java tasks each), every model produced vulnerabilities rated BLOCKER, and code smells made up roughly nine in ten of the issues for each model.
Each study has limits. Veracode’s public summaries report syntax and security pass rates and describe no functional-correctness testing. Sonar’s research is first-party, covers Java only and tested 2025-era models. Read them as direction, not precision. The Sonar research also found that models differ in coding style, which it calls “coding personality,” one more reason to test on your own code.
Pros and cons by model type
Names change faster than trade-offs. Whichever list of the best AI models for code generation you start from, these three types cover most choices in 2026. Examples are listed alphabetically and are not a ranking.
Why aren’t benchmark results enough to choose a coding model?
A coding LLM leaderboard is a reasonable place to build a shortlist. It is a weak basis for a final decision, because the numbers depend on the test set, the harness, the scoring method and the date.
Test sets age. In February 2026 OpenAI said it had stopped reporting SWE-bench Verified scores. An audit of a hard subset of 138 problems found that at least 59.4% had flawed test cases, and OpenAI found evidence of training-data contamination. A newer benchmark, SWE-bench Pro, has drawn similar scrutiny: in July 2026 OpenAI withdrew its recommendation of it, estimating that about 30% of its tasks were broken.
Passing tests is not the same as being mergeable. METR had four maintainers from three open-source repositories review 296 AI-generated patches. Roughly half of the test-passing patches would not have been merged. Normalized to the roughly 68% merge rate of the human-written reference patches, maintainers’ merge rates ran about 24 percentage points below the automated score. METR tested agents from mid-2024 to late-2025 and cautions that this is a research note using one agent setup, not a claim about a fundamental limit on capability.
Setup matters, though how much is debated. Anthropic reported a 6-percentage-point gap on Terminal-Bench 2.0 between the most- and least-resourced infrastructure setups, and advised that “leaderboard differences below 3 percentage points deserve skepticism until the eval configuration is documented and matched.” A September 2026 study published by Arena (HarnessTax) found that the average effect of the harness on success rate stayed within about 2% on SWE-bench Lite and about 5% on Terminal-Bench 2.0, while costs differed by up to 5x.
Boards measure different things. Arena’s WebDev leaderboard ranks models from head-to-head votes (846,326 votes across 141 models as of 7 October 2026). SWE-bench-style boards score issue resolution against test suites. Terminal-Bench scores terminal tasks and is now on version 4.0. Each measures something real. None measures your codebase, and the top of the table can differ by benchmark and date.
Five questions to ask of any leaderboard
- Which model version and settings were tested: exact model ID, effort level and date?
- What is the test set, and is it still considered valid?
- What harness or agent ran the model, and is it the one you will use?
- How is success scored: automated tests, human preference or something else?
- How often is the board refreshed, and when was it last updated?
A ranking that cannot answer these questions is a headline, not evidence. That is why this post does not publish one.
How should teams choose an AI coding model? A five-step selection framework
Here is how to choose an AI coding model as an experiment you can repeat, not a one-time purchase decision.
1. Define the tasks and the acceptance bar
Pick the three to five tasks from the previous section that matter most to your team. Decide in advance what “accepted” means for each, for example merged without rework, or passing CI and one review. Writing the bar down first stops results from being reinterpreted later.
2. Shortlist two or three candidates and pin them
Build the shortlist from public benchmarks and vendor documentation, and include a model of a different type if your constraints allow. Pin each candidate to an exact model ID or snapshot rather than a moving alias. Anthropic documents that it does not update an existing model ID and ships updated versions under new IDs, and OpenAI documents that snapshots let you lock in a specific model version, while an alias such as chat-latest points to a snapshot that is regularly updated.
3. Pilot on your own work and measure acceptance
Use real tickets, with the same prompts, tools and repositories for every candidate. Record acceptance rate, review rounds, rework time, cost per accepted change and latency. A scorecard like this keeps the comparison honest.
4. Validate in CI, identically for every candidate
Run the same build, tests, static analysis, secrets and dependency checks on every candidate’s output, and enforce the same quality gate. This replaces “which model felt better” with evidence, and it applies one standard to all candidates.
5. Set guardrails and re-run when things change
Decide where AI-generated changes need human review, which paths are off limits, which models are approved, and what triggers a new pilot: a new model version, a retirement notice, a cost change or a rising rate of quality gate failures.
How do you build an AI coding stack that separates generation from verification?
Whichever model wins your pilot, treat it as one replaceable component. The model generates. A separate layer verifies. Keeping them apart lets you change models without changing your standards.
There are two reasons. The first is the evidence above: studies across many models find security and quality gaps in generated code, and passing tests does not mean a change is mergeable. The second is that self-review is a weaker control than it sounds. In one 2025 study of 14 open-source non-reasoning models on non-coding tasks, models corrected errors in external input that they failed to correct in their own output (Tsui). The wider evidence is mixed and mostly outside coding, so independent review combined with deterministic checks is a safer default, not a proven fix.
Sonar’s Agent Centric Development Cycle (AC/DC) organizes the work into three stages around the agent’s own generation.
Sonar covers these layers with tools that work alongside the agents your teams already use. The SonarQube MCP Server connects supported agents and IDEs, including Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot CLI, to SonarQube analysis, and is free and source-available. Sonar Vortex brings Guide, Verify and Solve into agents such as Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI, Cursor and Antigravity; availability depends on your SonarQube edition and subscription. In CI, SonarQube checks each pull request against its project’s quality gate, applying the gate’s new-code conditions. Its built-in “Sonar way for agentic AI” gate is recommended for agent centric development, and with your DevOps platform integration configured, a failing gate can block the merge.
The verification gap is real. In Sonar’s own State of Code survey (1,149 responses, fieldwork in October 2025), 96% of developers said they do not fully trust that AI-generated code is functionally correct, yet only 48% completely agree that they always check AI-assisted code before committing.
Verify AI-generated code with Sonar
The model you choose will change. The standard your code has to meet should not. Sonar verifies every change against one consistent standard, independently of the tool that generated it, before it reaches production. That holds whether you standardize on one model, run several, or switch next quarter.
